[EVENT ALERT] NYC - “Kawaii” presented by Blue Roses illustrators

Get ready for some awesome "KAWAII" art as the Blue Roses, illustrators from Japan Present “Kawaii” Showing in New York City and Tokyo at the same time!



I idea of “kawaii” in Japan for me means all things cute or adorable.
The term and concept became big in Japan around the 70's and has since become
a staple of Japan's pop culture from entertainment clothing, and food, to toys, comic books, personal appearance, and behavior and mannerisms. You can't go to japan and not see something as "Kawaii"

So Recently kawaii-style illustrations featuring little girls and women have gained momentum, and established a new genre that’s commonly referred to as “Girls Illustration”. The name is deceiving, since the style is not simply “cute” and by no means childish. “Girls Illustration” can feature sophisticated themes and appeal to people of all ages.

18 illustrators and up-and-coming artists who have been creating “Girls Illustration” since 2009 make up Blue Roses They have taken the genre in unexpected directions introducing innovative elements and unique styles. The first Blue Roses group show in Tokyo, in December 2009, was a huge success, with more than 500 people attending. “Kawaii” will feature 15 members of the group and a special guest who will present their personal interpretations of this fascinating and beautiful concept.

EVENT ALERT:[NYC EVENT] SAKURA MATSURI-MAY 1st-MAY 2nd 10 a.m.–6 p.m.

Although spring is almost over, and in Japan, most of the Cherry Blossom celebrations are over with, It's just getting started here in NYC! Yes, it's that time of year again for the annual SAKURA MATSURI 桜祭り held at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. For those that remember I attended this event last year and had a great time. SAKURA MATSURI 桜祭り at at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, will be held from MAY 1st through MAY 2nd, and will be celebrating Japanese culture with over 60 events and performances, as well as a viewing of the Botanical Garden's 220 cherry trees! Some event's You can be sure to find are: Anime Stand-up Comedy, Japanese Hot-Pot Cooking,Japanese music and dance, manga, mataro Ningyo Doll Making Demonstration, taiko drumming performances, ikebana flower arranging, Japanese DJs, tea ceremonies,and various workshops. Just like last year, I'm hoping to catch The Infinite Spirits: A Samurai Drama (Samurai Sword Soul) stage performance on Sat. May 1st. I arrived a bit late and was not able to get an up front view but what I did get to see was pretty amazing. I'll be sure to arrive extra early this year!

So if you are around the NYC area, this is an event you don't want to you. You have two days so there is no excuse for you not to attend ;-)

EVENT ALERT:[NYC EVENT] ANIME! at American Museum of Natural History, April 17-18

I LOVE Japanese related events in NYC and this is one you DON'T want to miss if you are in the NYC area. The American Museum of Natural History, which is located at 79 Street And Central Park West, is having a Global Weekends program which will feature Bollywood and Anime on April 17 (Sat) and 18 (Sun). There is an entire guide to this event so I won't go into every detail but I will highlight a few key events that should get your attention!

FEATURED ANIME FILMS:
There will be an anime film PREMIEREon April 17 (Sat) at 3:45pm at the Kaufman Theater. It will be the U.S premier of director Rintaro's film titled Yona Yona Penquin
This fantasy adventure features Coco, an adventurous little girl who is obsessed with penguins. Her eyes are soon opened to world she has never seen before.





Another film to makes it's US debut is Eureka Seven: Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers, showing April 18 (Sun) at 12:00pm at Kaufman Theater. This film is based on the hit anime TV series Eureka Seven, and is a must see for any fan of the series.




ANIME GALLERIA:
Showing on April 17 (Sat) and 18 (Sun) 1:00pm – 5:00pm at Grand Gallery,there
will be a showing of a large collection of anime trailers from exciting 2009/2010 titles by various anime distributors including Aniplex and FUNimation. A big one that will be showing will be HALO LEGENDS This series was highly anticipated, and brought together the finest talent in Japanese animation to take on one of the largest game franchises for the XBox. HALO LEGENDS explore the mystery and action of the Halo universe in Eight episodes, shedding new light and epic perspective on Halo lore.





You can count on there being videogames, and manga, toys, and figures as well to feed your need. Even a CG Anime Production!






The main draw for me at least will be the LIVE MUSICAL PERFORMANCE of the entire two day event. On April 17 (Sat) and 18 (Sun) 3:30pm at the Grand Gallerynthere will be a performance by West Coast/Tokyo based Japanese Hip Hop artist, Shing02!
This is exacting because it will be a rare performance by the artist well known for lending his vocals on the opening track “Battlecry” of the hit anime series Samurai Champloo. “Battlecry” was produced by Nujabes, who recently passed. I am curious to see Shing02's performance and hear what he has to say in regards to the late Nujabes passing. It would have been great to see both live at this event!



The Global Weekends program is a free event and seating for Shing02 is limited and is available on a first-come, first-served basis, so of course you will need to get there early to ensure you have a good view! I'll be sure to bring my camera along and record as much as I can, so look forward to a follow up post in the days to come following this event!

EVENT ALERT:[NYC EVENT] Vital Signals Japanese & American Video Art from the 1960s & ‘70s

They always have interesting, and entertaining events several times a month, and on Saturday, November 14 there will be a media event held called Vital Signals Japanese & American Video Art from the 1960s & ‘70s



Vital Signals, a program of early video art from America and Japan.
It will highlight the significant parallel developments in these countries during the 1960s and ‘70s. The three-part screening program brings together rarely screened and seminal video art works, and includes a special discussion with artist Takahiko Iimura and American video artist Mary Lucier.

[EVENT ALERT] The New York Botanical Garden Presents: Kiku in the Japanese Autumn Garden

Now, I've never actually been to the The New York Botanical Garden, but now is the perfect time seeing how the nice weather has resurfaced for awhile. The Botanical Garden is also holding a wonderful fall treat...Kiku in the Japanese Autumn Garden



Another huge reason to go and see this Japanese Garden while the weather is nice, is that this will be the third and final year of the Botanical Garden’s presentation of kiku which is Japanese for chrysanthemum! Kiku in the Japanese Autum Garden will run from October 17th through November 15th.

To give you an idea of what this event is all about, PLEASE take a look at the following video that takes you through Kiku in the Japanese Autum Garden


So not only is there the gardens to tour, but you also can attend various classes about gardening as well as the tradition of Japanese Garden plants. There will also be entertainment performances to watch as well. I'm not going to miss this event and well, if you are in the NY area you should make a plan to attend yourself!

From the look of it,heavenly BENTO looks to be one of the most interesting and innovtive preformaces that one could see. It is an interactive performance that is based on the epic journey of the found­ers of Sony Corporation, Akio Morita and Masaru Ibuka, and their dream of forming an internationally successful consumer electronics company! The performance takes place on a raised stage that also functions as a pro­jection surface. Please take a look at a few scenes from the heavenly BENTO preformance.

[EVENT ALERT] BAMcinématek features The Films of Hirokazu Kore-eda

When I first read the name Hirokazu Kore-eda I had to do a search on google. I knew I had seen/heard the name before but it wasn't until I saw the titles of some of his movies that I realized who he was.

Anyone remember seeing a movie titled, Nobody Knows (Dare Mo Shiranai)? Please have a look at the trailer below,


I first saw this movie while in College when the film department was showing a series of Japanese films. I recall that although this was based on a true story, my first reaction was that it was a bit too long.. I recently saw this again a little bit aog and felt that it tells a touching story (still too long) and was a bit sad but still enjoyable.

[EVENT ALERT] Student Anime Film Screening & Discussion with Anime Scriptwriter Dai Sato

If you are an anime fan, please keep Saturday, August 22, 2 PM open as the Japan Society is sponsering an anime event.

View short animation films created by 25 high school students participating in A*NI*ME: Japanese Animation Production; A summer Immersion Workshop for High School Students which started Monday, August 10 and runs through Saturday, August 22. The workshop was taught by Dai Sato, Japan’s leading anime scriptwriter and co-instructors Aaron Hughes and Ru Kuwahata, both professional animators.

Along with the screenings there will also be an interactive discussion between the students and Dai Sato both parts of this event are open to the public, so if you are curious head on over!

Doors open at 1:30 pm, space is limited and admission is first-come first-served as long as seats are available.

EVENT ALERT:[NYC EVENT] The New York Asian Film Festival

I love NYC and my favorite time of the year has just arrived! Well yes summer (although we haven't really been having any summer time weather), but I'm really talking about the 2009 New York Asian Film Festival!!
The festival runs from June 19 - July 2 at IFC Center and July 1 - 5 at Japan Society.




The New York Asian Film Festival is once again showcasing some of the very best Asian films from 2008 and even some from 2009! Highlights this year include: 20th Century Boys a film based on a best-selling manga; Ryosuke Hashiguchi’s, All Around Us; and Sion Sono’s Love Exposure.

What I like about this Festival is that a lot of the movies if not all are showed more than once so if you can't make the first screening, which seems to always be the case with me, you can always go another day. Let me share with you some of the films I plan on attending!

EVENT ALERT:[NYC EVENT] Japan Day @ Central Park

I'm back and I have another exciting Japan related event to post about.
If you are not busy on Sunday May 31st, you have to stop by Central Park for Japan Day (entrance at Fifth Avenue and 97th Street). I'm working Sunday afternoon but the event starts early so I will go in the morning.. and you better believe I am SUPER EXCITED.. Plus it's right acros from my apartment so it's a plus!



Japan Day @ Central Park is an event designed by the Japanese community of New York to promote deeper understanding of Japanese culture and, to say "Thank you, New York!" There will be a ton of festivities, and tents offering a wide range of Japanese traditional and family-friendly activities. Of course you know there will be plenty oof Japanese Food for you to sample as well! Stage performances will be held throughout the day, with top entertainers from New York and Tokyo.

Around 8am there will be a a 4-mile race,to start Japan Day off, organized by New York Road Runners. 10AM is when the real festivities will begin!

I'm very excited as this will be my first time attending. I'll be sure to take pictures and post about this event after I attend!

NY Sakura Matsuri- WHAT AN AWESOME EVENT!

A few weeks ago I posted on a huge event taking place in Brooklyn NY called SAKURA MATSURI. This was the first major Japanese culture even that I have been to since moving to NYC and I can tell you I had an amazing time and it made me miss Japan even more. I had no clue that the venue which the event was held at (Brooklyn Botanical Garden) Has 220 cherry trees. All were at full bloom and very much breathtaking!

I was only able to attend the events on the first day (May 2nd)but it was truly event filled. I started off the day waiting in a rather long line to get in. (I had no idea that this event was so popular) The forecast called for rain but surprisingly and thankfully it turned out to be warm and sunny, which made being around all the flowers even more enjoyable














My fried ad I started out just walking about the gardens, the place is quite large and it was quite crowded.



Saw quite a few people dressed up in goth and cosplay! My friend wasn't used to seeing this and so most of her pictures of that day were of every kinda of anime character you could imagine. She loved it, but not enough to dress up herself ^^.

The festival had 50 events between the two days but I was only able to go to a few.The performances range from traditional Japanese music and dance to concerts by some of Japan's hottest J-pop stars, plus taiko drumming, an anime voice actor panel, bonsai pruning workshops, J-pop DJs, a traditional kimono show, and demonstrations and workshops.
I found myself listening to some jams at the j-lounge.. this was so cute too because there was a child who wandered out near the stage and was dancing along with the music. I have video somewhere and will post once I find it.






Next was the main event for me of the day .. the Samurai troop. This MUST have been the main highlight of the day as there wasn't a really good spot to see when we got there. I did find a space and took some photos but you really had to be there and se them fight. It was done in a story about Genji and the action was very exciting. They even used real swords. The choreography was well done and it had me on my toes at some moments. (Also some of the samurai guys were pretty cute so that was a plus!) (There was also a girl in there rockin an afro! ) I think the performance was only supposed to be an hour long but it went longer and I was very glad. After there was a break where the leader of the troupe was giving mini "samurai lessons" to random people in the auidance. This was also very funny!





I'll post the videos I tok in another post, part 2 if you will. I am just glad I was FINALLY able to go to this event and enjoy the weather! I hope to see more fun cultural events as summer kicks into gear!

EVENT ALERT:[NYC EVENT]Introducing New Yukata Collection by Shiorian

In modern society in Japan, people wear western style clothes more often than the Japanese traditional kimono. While a kimono tends to be considered formal and something for special occasions, yukata, cotton-made kimono for summer season, is worn on more casual occasions and more frequently. Especially in summer festivals, yukata is must-wear clothing for heightening the festive mood.

For ten days, from May 1 to 10, Kiteya introduces the new yukata collection from Shiorian, which is made by artisans in Kyoto, providing customers an opportunity to choose their favorite from untailored yukata fabric with a wide variety of patterns and order their own yukata. Shiorian produces hand-dyed cotton, which comes in various patterns from classic to modern. Each pattern is a work of art and has its own name. For example, “Kage Aki Kusa”, whose name comes from words used for Japanese traditional poems, depicts flowers flickering in the autumn breeze and their reflecting shadow. EVENT ALERT:[NYC EVENT] SAKURA MATSURI-MAY May 2–May 3, 2009 | 10 a.m.–6 p.m. | Rain or Shine

The other huge event besides the Asian American International Film Festival (which I will blog about later) is the 28th annual Japanese Cherry blossoms festival, in Brooklyn Botanical Garden This year will be my first at this event, which I unfortunately had kept missing year after year.

SAKURA MATSURI will hold over 50 events and performances celebrating Japanese culture and the blossoming of Brooklyn Botanical Garden's 220 cherry trees. (wow that's a lot)
The performances range from traditional Japanese music and dance to concerts by some of Japan's hottest J-pop stars, plus taiko drumming, an anime voice actor panel, bonsai pruning workshops, J-pop DJs, a traditional kimono show, and demonstrations and workshops.

Looking at the list of events during the festival, it seem the performances will take place on May 2nd. Two of the big performances will be by J-pop sensations,
Minami Kizuki and Ai Kawashima Her are videos of both ... just in case you don't know who these ladies are.

Like the movie Drumline.. well now there is a stage show (NOW PLAYING IN JAPAN)

Last night I was doing my normal Keyhole TV channel surfing and stumbled upon a Japanese CM for a Drumeline Stage show. I was very surprised and so I researched it further online.

The show is called Drumline Live and is is created by the music team behind the movie Drumline. If you are unfamiliar with the movie here is a trailer.



They are doing a Worldwide tour, U.S., Japan, Korea, and More...
They are in Japan now!(4/22-4/26) as I saw the ads for their preformance.. Go here to check out the official site!

The BGSU Japanese Club 8th Annual Cherry Blossom Festival

IT'S TIME!!

So this morning I received the e-mail invitation from my old College (Bowling Green State University) for the annual Cherry Blossom Festival (Ohanami)

This has always been a favorite event for me during my college years, and each there is such a great turnout. Bowling Green State University was given a few Cherry Blossom Trees as a gift years ago and each year they bloom and give the campus a really nice color. Our college's Japanese club Hosts the event each year which includes GREAT food, a variety of games, origami lessons, taiko drum performance,singing of tha Sakura song, and even kareoke!!

I am going to try and go to the event this year. Last year I took part by wearing my Yukata I bought while in Japan and helping out with some of the games for the kids. I was in charge of the Yoyo game. Here are some pictures of Last years Ohanami

KRAZY! will be New York’s first major show dedicated to the Japanese phenomenon of Anime, Manga, and Video Games—three forms of contemporary visual art that are exercising a huge influence on an entire generation of American youth. The exhibition, organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery, will be presented in an environment designed by cutting-edge architectural practice Atelier Bow-Wow, featuring life-size blowups of popular figures from the worlds of anime and manga within an intriguing sequence of spaces that evoke Tokyo’s clamorous cityscape. Co-curated by leading North American and Japanese specialists, KRAZY! will give visitors a direct experience of new forms of cultural production and offers fresh insight into the interdependence of three art forms of the future.


Anime Film Screenings
The anime films that are featured in KRAZY! will be shown full-length in the recently upgraded—with digital projectors and 5.1 surround sound—auditorium at the Japan Society. The films that will be shown are:

Katsuhiro Otomo’s classic, Akira (1988); Masaaki Yuasa's Mind Game (2004); Satoshi Kon’s, Paprika (2006); Patlabor 2: The Movie, by Mamoru Oshii (1993); The Place Promised in Our Early Days (2004), by Makoto Shinkai; and Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Episode 9, 17, 18, and 27 (1982-83), designed by Ichiro Itano.

Screenings will begin Saturday, March 14 and will continue until June 14, 2009. Viewing times are Friday: 3:00 to 9:00 pm; Saturday and Sunday: 11:00 to 5:00 pm.


I will be in NYC to see this event so I will post more about it after I attend!
I think this wil be very fun and all hose interested in Anime, manga, and japanese movies should show up for all the fun!
